Coronavirus – What different makes differences?

The rapid spread of the new coronavirus puts everyone in danger. From the beginning of January, it spread mainly in China, and then suddenly soared in Italy and Iran, spreading rapidly all over the world in two months. Obviously, this has become a big problem that we human beings need to face together. However, the social problems caused by the spread of new coronavirus, the response methods of different countries to new coronavirus, and the communication between many different cultures also give us a lot of topics worthy of discussion. As a Chinese in the UK and an Asian in Europe, I intend to take China and Germany as an example, writing this feature to share some of my findings and ideas about the new coronavirus as objectively and neutrally as possible.

What is Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a new illness which is highly infectious and can be transmitted through air, especially in the lungs of patients. It causes pneumonia. The incubation period is about 14 days, usually around 3 ~7 days. Patients can have symptoms such as dry cough, fever, fatigue. Because of the strong infectivity of the disease, the patients need to be treated and isolated in time to avoid infecting others.

Up to now (19th Mar, 2020), Coronavirus has infected about 220000 people, nearly 9000 of whom have died.

In China…

As the first country to find new crown cases, the Chinese government plays a very important role in the fight against the new crown virus. During the spread of the epidemic, the Chinese government mobilized human and resources from all regions, even the military to Wuhan for support. This also reflects a feature of China in dealing with emergencies – gathering resources.

Since 10 a.m., Jan 23rd. Wuhan has been under lockdown to contain the spread of the disease. The next day, the first batch of medics from outside Hubei Province in China was assigned to help Wuhan. And 450 military medics also arrived that night.

“The Chinese people are now fighting a very serious battle against the epidemic. The people’s safety and health always come first, it is the country’s most important work for now.” Chinese President Xi Jinpin spoke in 24 Jan.

As Xi called for the coordinated approach in prevention and control work. More and more resources for treatment, prevention and protection send to the front line of the battle against epidemic. The most impressive one is the Huoshenshan and Leishenshan hospital was both built and put into use in 10 days and 46 designated and 14 temporary hospital provided around 20 thousands bed.

Total Coronavirus Cases in China. After February, the numbers is going stable.

This series of measures have solved the problem of scarce medical resources. After making the most of people’s beds and medical resources, the Chinese government focused on the plan of closing the city. Nearly 40 thousands volunteers have been sent to communities in various regions in order to implement the plan of closing the city, providing local people with services such as temperature measurement and virus detection. At the end of February, China finally reached a cure for more than 40 thousands coronavirus cases, the first time that more patients have been discharged than infected. The cumulative number of recover patients hit around 40 thousands, exceeding the number of confirmed cases for the first time. In March 7th, no local transmitted coronavirus case was reported on the Chinese mainland outside of Hubei Province for the first time. This basically shows that China’s fighting against the epidemic is near to get successful. To some extent, this has bought time for the world to fight against the coronavirus.

In Germany…

Germany’s treatment of the coronavirus is in fact another successful route. After an outbreak in China, the response of different countries to the virus usually determines the impact of the virus on the country. Italy is one of the countries that are far away from China that have a more optimistic attitude towards the spread of the epidemic, which makes them appear unprepared when the virus comes quickly. The number of confirmed cases in Italy doubled daily in early March. There is no way for Italy to continue to try to learn from the management experience previously used by China, to gradually block cities, and to block the country on March 9, but until now, the situation in the country is still not optimistic.

Total Coronavirus Cases in Italy. Italy started to “lockdown” the country since Mar 9th.

On March 12, the number of confirmed cases officially exceeded 2000 in Germany. In the days before that, the number of people doubled every day. But the majority of the people are still in normal activities.

On March 10, an audience debate was held on Bayern radio. The topic of the debate was: should we cancel the large-scale event now?

“Just go home and wash your hands. Why panic? If all the activities are cancelled, what’s the point of our life? ” Voices like this dominate the debate.

On March 11, Bayern radio opened an expert Q & a session on the new coronavirus. A mother asked: she is very worried, can she let her children stay at home during this period of time without going to class?

The expert replied without hesitation: This is not allowed. Whether schools are closed or not is determined by the state health and education departments. If parents leave their children at home without permission, they may also be fined for obstructing their children’s education.

When you see these situations, as people who have experienced China’s fight against the epidemic, it seems a little inconceivable. Obviously it is time to improve the defense. But in fact, Germany is the country with the lowest mortality rate. How did they do it?

Germany is the country with the lowest mortality rate.

Late February in Germany, after a large amount of Italian cases. German have realized that the outbreak is inevitable. With Germany’s population and resources, only when the number of infected people is small can close tracking of the source of infection be carried out, that is, similar to China’s method. Once there are more than 100 people infected, the investment in each infected person will be very difficult to achieve. After the outbreak became serious, Germany adjusted its strategy to fight to the disease according to the experience from Europe and China.

As a result, the new coronavirus is spreading rapidly in Germany, but hospitals in Germany do not accept light patients, even if the hospital still has a location. This is a lesson learned from China’s lack of hospital resources before January 22, which exacerbated the injured population. Once all the people are in the hospital, not only do they infect each other, but more importantly, the seriously ill patients are more difficult to get treatment after the collapse of the medical system, and the death rate will soar.

Insisting such a strategy, as long as there is no shortage of medical resources, severe patients will be treated accordingly, light diseases can heal themselves, and Germany will greatly reduce the mortality rate.

What can we learn?

In short, China has adopted a solution with Chinese characteristics in the face of coronavirus, relying on the coordination of various regions to turn the tide. It is a kind of “problem solving”. Germany has used a rigorous method with German characteristics to curb the spread speed of the virus to ensure the normal medical system. It is a kind of “damage control”. Nowadays many countries are in trouble with the coronavirus, in addition to their own economic and demographic factors, sometimes the bigger problem is that they have not found a set of solutions in line with their own national conditions.

In addition, China and Europe have not only huge differences in national conditions, but also cultural differences. In China, people’s attitude towards living is more obvious. There is an old saying “living bad is better than dead”. At the same time, most of the Chinese also have a sense of overall situation and collective cooperation. This will lead to 1.4 billion people obeying the order of the state and staying at home for two months. It’s a miracle.

But there is more yearning for freedom in European values. Restricting people’s activities for two months probably even make people feel that life is not as good as death for some people. What’s more, this generation in Germany is basically living a relatively stable and prosperous life, which makes them full of security and calmer towards disasters.

The epidemic is a window through which we can have a chance to glimpse the most real side of a country and its people. In this era of intensive global information and culture exchange, we can learn from each other and learn from each other through epidemic situation. This is one of the enlightenment brought to us by coronavirus.

Coronavirus in Newcastle – Seriously affects more and more normal football life of fans

“You know more and more cases are confirmed in Newcastle, so all of us are potentially in danger.”

Coronavirus is coming. That’s not joking.

So far, the UK has been infected with more than 1,400 Coronavirus cases, including 5 in Newcastle.
When the virus comes, it obviously has a great impact on our lives. When we interviewed Wu, Newcastle were just the first cities to ban handshaking before the games of Premier League.
With the suspension of Serie A and La Liga, the Premier League officially announced the postponement of the match from March 13.
As a fan, it’s a big loss.
Turn our eyes to the football around us, it might reflect the impact of every ordinary citizen s football live more clearly.

“I am the manager of the Chinese football team. My role is quite like an agent. Our matches played on weekly basis. Sometimes we also invite our rivals to play together. But in most cases we just played with our members.”

As a person with access to a large number of players and football fans, he has the deepest understanding of the impact of the virus.

“The matches of recent days were canceled due to the lack of the players. They are still a lot of people playing in the ground but it is less than usual.”

Based on previous experience in fighting the virus, the sooner the public start to prevent it, the less harm it will do us. When we talk about our live, we are willing and need to suspend many recreational activities, even though we love football.

Grimsby Legend: Developing player is fantastic!

The former Grimsby FC legendary right back, one of the only 17 players in the history of English football to play more than 600 Football League matches for a single club, John McDermott, is having the enjoyable retirement life as a coach of Grimsby Institute. He spend most of his life in football especially in Grimsby.

In an interview, you can see the Grimsby legend shared his happiness of working for football to us – developing the youth player of Grimsby Institute. What’s more, he discusses his opinion about the football development all over the world from an angle of a youth coach.

Developing player – a fantastic job as a next step of the football life

“When you are coaching, sometimes you got frustrating because it is obviously you can’t play. And you rely on the player to do the job what you want to be done.”

John McDermott tried to start his coaching career just after his retirement in 2007. He was the assistant manager of Harrogate Town, the director of football at Cleethropes Town, and the manager of Alfreton Town since 2017.

“We have rewarding as well. We can get our team to be successful and the individual player can be successful. That’s the bonus. It is great when you win the title, win the league as long as the player getting better. that’s the bonus for us.”

In his career of coaching Grimsby Institute, about 15-20 players of the academy went to Grimsby Town FC to play professional football. To make the youngster dreams come true is also one of the driving forces of John to coach.

Europe and Asia – The concentration to football of the student makes the biggest different

“The training is good for the students. They on different courses. A few in sports, a few in media. As long as they are on the academic course, they give them a little bit trades or something to fall backs on in case of they don’t make the professional football. But it’s great if we can if we give them that dream.”

About the college entrance examination of China, John believed it could have a better way.

“I think it give the students a race. Sometimes it cleared their mind. If you sat in a classroom all day. Sometimes you can get stock in that. The concentration levels dropped. I think you can get a little bit exercise as well. It obviously keeps you fit and good for concentration.”

“When you are in the football, you get the nutrition and the diet. It is not just about running around and doing the basic football. You got all of the physical add along with it.”

“I think if football can add into the course, China is going to get better.”

Data from FIFA.COM

As we see the chart, most of the countries with a large registered football population can get results and improve the performance of the national team.

It is obvious that China had the most football player of the world. But the registered player is much less even just a half of England. As John McDermott said, player in China are likely to concentrate more on their coursework than in football. They just “play” football. But if we take the player into the system. When they have more time to training instead of staying at the room, they had more chance to develop themselves and even most of them did not get into professional football. If there is some players of the school coming into the team of their city or town like what John McDermott do in Grimsby Institute, it is not only a kind of making their dreams come true but also adding the possible of creating another “Messi” and “Ronaldo”.

Young players developement are always the key to a club even a national team. John McDermott‘s persistence his player career makes him an example for every young player, and his efforts in the coaching career will show more and more results over time.

Cochrane Park – Free to get your own harvest from women football

Cochrane Park, a football field far away from the city center which probably never attract your attention. But it is absolutely worth going if you are a big football lover.

The football field is the home court of Newcastle University football team, including the men’s and women’s football teams and their respective second teams. As I came in today, there is a women football game between Newcastle University second team and York University second team. Newcastle University women’s football second team had a dramatic win after the penalty kick.

Annis, Newcastle University football player

The women football game of University had a good league system. This is quite similar to the professional football in the UK. The player still also enjoy nice facilities and their football career. Women’s football never lack of talented players and wonderful games. What is lacking is the attention of the audience. Some of the player also mentioned about this point as the biggest difference from men’s football.

From NCL to the world – A point of view from a sport presenter in Newcastle about Chinese football

The first episode of this column focuses on a far place in Asia – China. China Super League (CSL) has recently become a gathering place for many European famous players, including former Newcastle United striker Salomón Rondón and coach Rafael Benitez. After the professionalization of Chinese football infrastructure, CSL is coming more and more mature. Even in the past two years, the attendances of CSL has reached 24100, ranking sixth in the world football league. However, in terms of national team and technical and tactical level, there is still a big gap between Chinese football and football powers. In this issue, we will briefly discuss the current development of Chinese football.

Jack Muscutt (Photograph: Nasri Peng)

I’m glad to invite Jack Muscutt, a Newcastle fan who used to work as a sports reporter on Estuary TV, to discuss the differences between Chinese football and British football from the perspective of a professional English football reporter. By discussing the differences between the development of Chinese football and British football, we can see whether the advanced British football concept and experience has the opportunity to help the development of Chinese football.

  1. Tradition – Much more longer history of professional football.

We can easily see some footballer as a idol of England teenagers. But it is very hard to find someone to be an idol in Chinese football. The professionalization of CSL was officially completed in 1994, more than hundreds years later than that of the UK.

“When I was a kid, Alan Shearer is my favorite player, I really upset when he stop player and I have a Newcastle shirt with Shearer on the back.”

2. Competitive – China need more teams to catch up with the top

From 2011, Guangzhou Evergrande began to monopolize the champion of CSL for seven years. During the Evergrande Dynasty, they won the Asian Champions League twice and participated in the World Club Cup. But we see many team can’t keep up with that investment. This is not necessarily good for the development of the whole league. During Evergrande’s victory, many old teams with less investment were demoted and disbanded. The emergence of “super teams” has reduced the competitiveness of the league and also made many sponsors of small teams leave the football market.

“One thing I say about Chinese League is that it need more teams to have the chance to win the league, otherwise it get boring.”

On the contrary, being always competitive is a feature of the Premier League. In the past decade, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have won the Premier League title successively, and this year Liverpool are also approaching the title. Premier League champions usually don’t monopolize because of a sudden big investment of a team. Instead, they need a long time to accumulate. This makes the League more healthy.

3. Passion – The passion of the fans are not enough

Premier League game are always full of audience. (Photograph: Nasri Peng)

The attendance of CSL ranked sixth in the global ranking. But when we look at the data of the fans of CSL, we will find that there are two characteristics. Firstly, the teams with high attendance and low attendance are far from each other. Guangzhou Evergrande, which ranks first in the attendance rate, has 45975 people per game, while Beijing Renhe with 8102 are the last in the attendance rate. Take the ticket price of 10 yuan per game as an example. Such a gap will make Guangzhou Evergrande earn 5.8 million yuan more than Beijing Renhe in a season. And the Beijing man and also relegated after the end of the season and until today have the possibility of disbanding the team. In addition, the number of people on the team is usually far from the capacity of the stadium. We can see that even Bournemouth, who has the lowest attendance in the Premier League, has a full attendance rate of 92.4% per game. While Beijing people and even though there are more than 8000 people on average, their full occupancy rate is only 26%.
